Altcoin trading mechanics

Understand the path from quote to outcome.

Price, liquidity, volume, and fees answer different questions. A better research record keeps them separate.

Reference prices are not execution promises

A reference price helps describe a market observation. It does not establish what you will receive for a particular quantity on a particular venue. Keep the asset identity, trading pair, quote time, available liquidity, and stated costs together when comparing information.

Uniswap’s explanation of impact and slippage distinguishes the effect of a trade on price from changes between expectation and execution. A slippage-tolerance setting is not simply another platform fee.

Give each measurement its own meaning

MeasurementUseful questionDo not confuse it with
Reference priceWhat observation or methodology produced this quote?A guaranteed fill for your desired quantity.
Trading volumeHow much activity was reported in this time window?Liquidity currently available for a new order.
Price impactHow does trade size affect execution in this market? The fee charged by a platform.
SlippageHow did the actual result differ from the expectation?A promised or unavoidable fixed charge.
FeesWhich amounts were charged, and in which assets?Every difference between two displayed valuations.

A simple execution illustration

In a fictional order book, 20 tokens are offered at $10 and another 30 at $11. Buying all 50 against those offers costs $530 before fees, an average of $10.60. The initial $10 price does not apply to the entire quantity. The arithmetic illustrates market depth; it is not a current quote or a recommendation to trade.

Preserve the original expectation when reviewing an outcome. A refreshed quote should not overwrite the record you are comparing against. Distinguish submission, confirmation, and the actual assets received. Read the full liquidity and slippage guide for a more detailed workflow.
